Happy New Year 2009 from all of us here at Singapore BMX

Hopefully 2009 will be a better year. I can and will drink to that.

Oh and some BIG news. Be prepared for something big happening for BMX next year. Still planning in progress but it is going to happen.

Aftermath of the old-school BMX gathering in East Coast

It was a resounding success. More people joined us and it was a great way to meet new friends. This is a classic shot of Peter Chua, an old-schooler from back in the day, with his son on a Haro Freestyler. His son was having a blast and I must say, so were all of us. It was a great day and all the pics are available on the forums here

Some mails I got recently

I love it when people send mails asking about our BMX scene here in Singapore. Here is an email I got today. This is a literal cut and paste, from a contributor in New Zealand

Can you keep me up datted with news. Keen to know whats going on. Im from New Zealand, and keen to take a NZ team over.

That is cool stuff. There are people interested and I will do what I can to get them informed about what is going on, even though I might have to deals with some monkeys to get more info.

Another email I got recently went like this.

Hi, Hope you can help us. We are planning to move to Singapore sometime next year. We are two bmxers. Where are the spots in Singapore to bmx? Thanks so much for your help.

I send this guy from Germany and email and also told him to get in touch with me when he gets here. Will be happy to show him what BMX can offer in this little island of ours.

Well people, keep those emails coming! As always, we can be reached at admin@osbmx.com and remember, Singapore BMX will do its best to update what is going on, with a little help from our friends (you know who you are)

Singapore BMX gathering on the 20th of December @ East Coast Park

There is a post about it in our forums and the post is located here. Let us end the year on a BMX note as we meet-up for our monthly BMX gathering. Come one, come all. Bring any bike and hang around the old-school BMXers. New-schoolers are welcome to! So keep the 20th of December date free!

Old-schoolers re-discovering BMX

I have been getting lots of email recently, many of them from old-schoolers who used to ride BMX back in the day. It must be BMX entering the Olympics and the looming Youth Olympic Games.

Hi stumbled on your website, wonder whether you can advice on what BMX bike to get that resembles what we rode on in the 80s. I rode a kuwahara Z1 and a redline600, hope i still remember the models. rode some races too with sky boys / scarecrow, though i was really young at the time.

also how do i know when there is action on the singapore bmx track and scene, which is at Tampines i am told. any news info on kids bmx lessons, races etc?

thanks for any advice

Thanks for that email. Well, the team that took over the BMX duties in Singapore (not us - we have been there and done that already) have organised some clinics for BMX but not that many nowadays. I will put up some info when I get it.

As for bikes looking like the Kuwahara's back in the day, well, SE Racing do make some bikes but whether or not they resemble bikes back in the day, I have got to level with you. I do not think we are the same size as we used to be way back when. My Kuwahara Survivor is too small for me...that is why I ride a 24" cruiser. But sometimes some companies, bike companies that is, make limited runs of old-frames. Skyway is one of them. They found some old un-welded tubes in storage and welded them up to be frames again. They were selling for a pretty penny but they were nice looking frames!

For anything else, keep your eyes peeled on our forums or scope Ebay!

Some are very curious about BMX in Singapore

Yep. As the date of Youth Olympic Games continues to come closer, I have been getting emails. This is one of them

I am a Masters of Architecture student at NUS. Currently I am doing my thesis which is about the architecture of major sports events and their post-event use. I have selected Tampines Bike Park as the site for my thesis. As part of my research, I would like to find out more about BMX biking in general and if possible, the plans for YOG2010 (the format, expected no. of participants, officials, volunteers etc). In addition I would also like to hear from BMX bikers their hopes for the Bike Park post-YOG.

I would be glad if people privy to the above may spare some time to grant an interview.

Thank you for your kind attention and looking forward to your favourable reply.

Thanks for the email. I have already replied to this gentleman. For others who want some answers to the questions posted above, here they are.

BMX was a sport that started in the USA in the late 60s. It was started because some kids wanted to emulate their motorcycle motocross heroes. So races were started and they were called pedal-cross races. More can be read by purchasing the DVD called Joe Kid On A Stingray or by going to a Wikipedia page of which I have helped to contribute. BMX or Bicycle Motocross means BMX racing, period. There are many offshoots of BMX like flatland, dirt-jumping and vert. These are lumped under a BMX category called freestyle, as what it used to be call when it was invented.

As for the Youth Olympic Games, the powers that be like the Singapore Sports Council do not really understand BMX racing in spite of the fact that BMX has been in Singapore since the early eighties.

As for wanting to hear from me, you are always welcome to email us at Singapore BMX and I will be happy to help to allay any misconceptions about BMX.

Updates on the Youth Olympic Games for BMX

One of my friends Gene is helping to post articles on our forums and his latest one is located here. However, when I went to take a look at the Singapore YOG website for BMX, they just show this:

BMX-Mountain Bike-Road mixed team event (3M, 1W)

So what is it going to be guys? Only one to represent Singapore in BMX? What are our newly-appointed BMX people doing about it to show more clarity to choice? How about a training regimen and a choice? Only about 600 days left now before the YOG in 2010 and so far, what I have seen has not been very encouraging, to say the least.

Well, we are all waiting for some good news to come out from the BMX camp. We are the core group after all but so far, we have not heard anything. Come on guys! Wake up already!

Singapore old-school BMX meetup on 22nd November

That is today my friends. We will be meeting up at the Bukit Batok Skatepark, our usual meeting place. Please check out the forum post here as it will give more information on our gathering. As usual, we hope to see old schoolers as well as new schoolers there just so that we can talk BMX about the past present and future. Trust me, you will get more than an education on BMX at these gatherings.

Well, so far has the new VP of BMX delivered?

Maybe it is still early so maybe it may not be fair to take them up to task but it is coming up to the end of the year and there is still no news about races for next year. I am starting to wonder if the new-school BMXers are capable of running the show for BMX in Singapore. It is 2009 next year...one more year towards the Youth Olympics. Nothing seems to have been planned and it looks even more that these people are in for the glory and not the responsibility. If they were in for the responsibility, they would have gotten involved ages ago.

More news as I get it folks.

Singapore BMX questions

I have been getting a lot of questions in my email, via SMS on my mobile phone and even on the forum. Some of the questions are about BMX in Singapore for the Youth Olympics in 2010 and some are even about the state of our one and only BMX track in Singapore at Tampines. I will answer all you questions to the best of my ability. After being VP of BMX in SACA for some time, I know a thiong or two with regards to BMX racing in Singapore. Send me an email at admin@osbmx.com and I will see what I can do about it

Old-school BMX gathering in Singapore 25th October 2008

We had the usual monthly gathering in the Bukit Batok skatepark on the evening of the 25th of October 2008. As always, with every gathering, new people turn up, looking to transport themselves back to the hey days of BMX. Well, all I can say is they certainly came to the right place! We had about three new people there and lots of new, re-conditioned bikes. They are all located on our forum in this thread. Have fun reading and enjoy the pics.

The new VP of BMX in Singapore

At the SACA AGM last night, a new VP of BMX was announced. It is none other that Ariff Jufri. He should know by now that he has a VERY big responsibility to the sport as all eyes will be on Singapore because of the Youth Olympics of 2010. I hope the SSC and MCYS gives him the support he needs to get this sport off the ground. Now with SSC funding under close scrutiny, Ariff needs to do even more to convince the powers that eb about the appeal of BMX and also to do something about the track in Tampines that is in a sad state. Ariff, a dirt-jumper, also needs to learn more about BMX racing and get acquainted with UCI rules pertaining to BMX racing. I hope that he does a good job and that people support him in this quest. I just hope that there are no "BMX consultants" who will come in just for the glory. This website will take them to task if necessary. To all who were nominated yesterday, congratulations!

Singapore Amateur Cycling Association (SACA) AGM

According to the website, it will be held today, the 24th of October 2008, at the Changkat CC Auditorium at 7pm sharp. I just hope that the new VP of BMX is not a complete muppet and will do something for the BMX scene in Singapore. I also hope that he is not one of those monkeys out there who has not paid his dues and now calls himself a "BMX consultant" In any case, this website will make sure that Singapore BMX gets the coverage it deserves.

See you guys there!

Something fishy about the new Haro

Check out this new Haro Master Freestyler retro edition. Looks nice, doesn't it? According to their website, they say

It took us two years to get this bike out of the vault, but it feels like 30.

There have been some rumblings on VintageBMX and BMX Museum that this new bike is not all it has been made out to be. The first Haro Freestyler from 1978 was made by Torker, and was made of 4130 chromoly. This one is a trimoly bike which means the frame's main tube is made of chromoly steel and the other parts are made of hi-tensile steel. It seems that they tried to cover it up on the website, saying it is chrome (which it is) but conveniently left out the moly part. The links to VintageBMX and BMX Museum should shed more light on theissue.

But here is the shocking part. When a VintageBMX member sent an email to Haro asking about it, he got tossed off. Further proof that bike companies nowadays are all about money. The reply is below:

you're an angry guy...guy. Chill out and realize that we have almost sold out of these bikes spec'd as is. I am sorry for the lack of Chromoly, but with the quality of HI Ten on the area's that we decided to put it, it held up perfect during testing and because of this, we were able to keep the price at $550.00 for the whole bike.

Some kind of customer service right? Testing? Yeah right. Lucky for me my Haro Backtrail cruiser is made of full 4130 chromoly. I will not be getting this bike. No way, Jose.

Classy Diamondback BMX picture

I love this pic. It shows Tosh Muraviov crashing through a Diamond Back banner. Turbo Harry Leary and Sandy Finkleman anre holding the banner. One thing I can say: Pure class!

RedLine PL-20 given a new lease of life

I love it when people do restoration works on their old bikes. This is what Ah Tien did to his childhood bike. It is a beautiful RedLine PL-20. Check out the attention to detail and the repro-ed stickers. He is going to enjoy this ride and I can see why not...it is a work of art! This is testimony to Linn Kastan's genius. Check ut the thread on the forums here

Silver Kuwahara pads

A friend of mine gave these to me years ago. They are still sealed in their original plastic bag and they will stay that way for a long time yet. Silver Kuwahara padsets! And they will stay in the bag forever. I also have another set of Kuwahara silver padsets but they are being used and are on my current bike

Next old-school BMX gathering on Saturday 25 October 2008

That is right folks. Mark that date in your calendar. This is when all the old-schoolers meet up to have their monthly gathering in Bukit Batok. You can check out the details in our forums here. See you all there!

More questions about the Tampines BMX Track

I wrote in the blog yesterday about the sorry state of the BMX track here in Singapore. Guess what. I received another email today. It is TWO years to the Youth OLympics and seems that there are some who do not even KNOW about the track because of the little mention of it in Singapore. Here is the email:

hey

i found your site somehow and i was wondering...... does there happen to be a BMX racing track in singapore? cos i first saw it on the Olympics and i'm DYING to try it out......... hope you can help me out.........

Well, to all who do not know where the track is, it is located in Tampines, at the Tampines Cycling track, at the junction of Tampines Avenue 7 and Tampines Avenue 9, opposite Sun Plaza Park. And SSC, SNOC, MCYS, maybe it will help if you put a description of the track on your website so people know that there is a BMX track in Singapore.

Can you imagine this? BMX, a sport that made its debut in the Olympics in Beijing, and a couple of years from now, it is going to be held in Singapore but the authorities are NOT helping to publicise this.

Still no news about BMX in Singapore for the Youth Olympics 2010

Gene has a BMX page aptly named Genes BMX. In it he puts snippets of BMX from all over the world. Over the years, I have found him to be a steadfast guy and always in the forefront with news. Someone wrote to him and asked him this question:

I am looking for information on the 2010 Summer Youth Olympic Games BMX? Anyone know anything? I want to get ready for this event. Please help?

Look at that. Someone is asking for help but I cannot blame this poor guy. The Singapore National Olympic Council has a website that does not even begin to explain about BMX. Even if they could find it on that webpage (which I doubt they can) there is not much done about it here in Singapore, as I can attest to. People in the media have almost a ZERO concept about what BMX is. To them, it is all about riders doing stunts on kids bikes. I have had to correct them more than a few times. Plus, our Singapore Sports Council folks, when they ask me about BMX, I tell them that I can do a demo and when I tell them what I need, they say there is no space. Well, how do I get the mesage across then?

Our track, or lack of it, is in a bad state of disrepair. I have asked them many a time if I can help to get it repaired. I have been asking that question since 2003. Now, a few bunch of our local youth are helping to fix it up. And I have lots of sports management people who all of a sudden think they are BMX experts. These monkeys have NOT even been around when I was conducting races back in the day so how would they no anything? These guys are as useful as (fill in your own cliche here)

I await, as do others, for SSC and SNOC to get tjeir respective houses in order BMX-wise, but I can tell you this. I am not holding my breath.

BMX questions in email

I still get heaps of BMX questions in my email. For all those bikeshop owners in Singapore who are reading this, maybe it is time you guys stock up on BMX parts, accessories and most importantly, bikes. The Youth Olympic Games are coming up in 2010 in Singapore. You guys cannot afford to be myopic as far as BMX is concerned. The person below was asking about street bikes but a BMX bike nonetheless.

Hi. Do you know where to buy street BMX in singapore ? Example Diamondback Orion (2009) or Haro Backtrail x 3. If you do , hope you could reply with the shop address ! thanks in advance

So guys, get cracking! The Youth Olympics is less than two years away!

Billy Griggs Nominated for ABA BMX Hall

News courtesy of Bike Retailer

LAGUNA HILLS, CA (BRAIN)—One of the most stylish racers of the '80s, Billy Griggs, has been nominated for the 2008 American Bicycle Association (ABA) BMX "Hall of Fame."

"Mr. Bill," as he's known, rode for CW, Mongoose, Redline, Schwinn and Iron Horse, as a top-ranked amateur. He's well-known in BMX for his style and speed.

Griggs is credited with bringing intense BMX frames to life and currently works in research and development for Razor USA. Griggs exercises his knack for custom frame building in the new products he develops for Razor.

Riding for Redline, Griggs turned pro in 1988. He was part of the second generation of the "Terrible Ten" in BMX Action magazine's Top 10 Amateurs list. During his pro career, Griggs held an average ranking of 12.7 with three top three rankings.

Latvian captures BMX men's gold

News courtesy of the International Herald Tribune

BEIJING: World champion Maris Strombergs of Latvia won the men's BMX gold Friday, sweeping to the front at the start of the winner-take-all final and never losing control in the sport's first-ever Olympic finals.

The French duo of Anne-Caroline Chausson and Laetitia Le Corguille took gold and silver, respectively, in the women's title race.

"It wasn't easy," said Chausson. "All the mistakes I've made in the last few races, in the last few years, I tried to show nothing of them in these games."

"It's really the work of two years to end up here. It's an immense satisfaction to get to here," said Chausson, 30, after what she has said will be her last competitive BMX race.

BMX racing was born in the United States four decades ago, so perhaps it was fitting that on the sport's biggest day, American racers collected the biggest medal haul.

Virtually nothing about Olympic BMX in our local press

I checked the TODAY newspaper as well as The Straits Times but there was hardly any mention of this new BMX sport that made its maiden Olympic debut yesterday. There was a picture of BMX racers in the TODAY newspaper but it was flanked by an advertisement by Nikon. I wonder by now if people know the difference between BMX racing and freestyle. The press can do a bit more to help to promote it, considering the fact that the Youth Olympics are going to be hosted in Singapore in two years time. Come on guys! Up the ante! Publish something about BMX in your newspapers!

Reade crashes into tomorrow's BMX showdown

News courtesy of The Independant

By Paul Newman in Beijing

When Shanaze Reade crashed and recorded the slowest time in her first seeding race in the women's BMX event today it seemed that the 19-year-old from Crewe might struggle to live up to her status as the favourite.

By the time she had finished her second run the twice world champion was looking more like the rider who has taken the sport by storm in recent years. The semi-finals taking place at 2am (BST) tomorrow, followed by the final 90 minutes later.

Olympics BMX 2008

20th August 2008. This marks the day of the start of the BMX in the Olympics. I did not get a chance to see it on television as I was at work but I am sure some videos will crop up in YouTube soon. In any case, the seeding runs have finished, as well as the quarter-finals. Results are located here

Time to break out that bike and get to work

With prices rising and ERP charges also rising, may people are taking the bus to work. While I applaud that move, what I do not applaud is the fact that SBS Transit has not increased the frequency of buses on the road. So once again, people get to work late because buses are packed. Maybe it is better to cycle to work. You get healthier and it is good for the cardiovascular system. On a BMX, being a singlespeed, it is even better. Try to find some showering facilities near your work if you can. I know I will start to do it more.

ex-BMX'er takes the gold

To all those naysayers who think that BMX is only for kids. Take a look at the picture at the guy on the left. That is Jamie Staff, an ex-BMXer who took part in track cycling and won gold! His foundation? BMX! So all those nay-sayers and non-believers (you know who you are) who think that BMX does not amount to anything, put that in your pipe and smoke it. You guys cannot see the wood from the trees!

The article can be found here and comes courtesy of the British Cycling Federation, as well as the the picture. Oh and by the way, Chris Hoy, the guy in the middle, is an ex-BMX'er too! Two out of three ain't bad you know...

Old-school BMX gathering at Bukit Batok on 16th August

Our monthly old-school gathering at the Bukit Batok Skate Park was a success as usual. This time it was a little different. Ismail and myself got interviewed by some students from Temasek Polytechnic. They got to know about BMX and I got to know how resourceful these students are when it comes to conducting interviews. Hopefully, they got a better understanding of BMX and how it functions, how it interests us and how it can appeal to the youth in Singapore. We had some skateboarders there to add to the scene and I must say that it was one of the few times that I got to see the Bukit Batok skatepark so full of activity. I always have a great time at these gatherings. Oh and the postings can be found at the forums here

The photo of my bike with the new one-piece cranks is courtesy of Freddy Foo. The photos on the link that I posted above are also to be credited to Freddy. Thanks Fred!

An old-school Diamond Back BMX site

I came across this site fairly recently. It is a website dedicated to the old-school Diamond Backs. According to the site:

This site is aimed towards reference of 'old school Diamond Back' BMX between the period 1977 to 1986 and dedicated to the great Sandy Finkelman. Though Sandy sadly passed away in 2005, his memory and vision live on in what I consider the most iconic name in BMX. Over time I hope to add reviews of Diamond Back history from the very people associated with them, moreso the 'riders' that inspired that generation and beyond.

I think he has it pretty much all figured out. Check out the site here

Another Temasek Polytechnic student sends me an email

I received this in the mail the other day.

Good Day,

We are a bunch of Temasek Design School students, currently working on our year 2 Project which is to design a website for the Youth Olympic Games. So, we have decided to focus on the new sports that will be featured in the Olympics and one of it is BMX Racing.

It would be great if you could provide us the information on the apparels, equipments and the rules & regulation for BMX Racing. And maybe your opinion on the future prospects of BMX in terms of an event in the Olympics, since there are the different genres of BMX. And is it possible for us to hold a meet up so that we conduct an interview with you?

To the one that wrote this, you are more than welcome to interview me and I will do all I can for the promotion of BMX in Singapore. Well, he said he might come down for the old-school BMX gathering on the 16th of August. We hope to see him there.

Happy National Day Singapore!

Singapore is 43 years old this year. May she continue to thrive! Singapore BMX wishes one and all a happy National Day!

Its on the 16th og August, not the 18th

Made a bit of a mistake there. In an earlier post, I said that the next old-school BMX gathering in Singapore would be on the 18th. That is wrong and I apologise for that. Next meeting of the old-schoolers is on the 16th of August at Bukit Batok Skatepark. I hope to see a big turnout and we will have some new faces there. Bring your bikes out and reminisce!

We could have had our own training facility in Singapore for BMX

I got this from Gene's BMX site. Imagine. If the Singapore Sports Council and MCYS had actually LISTENED to us back then, we would have had a great BMX track for these guys to come and train on. Given Singapore's relatively close proximity to China, it would have been perfect. These guys had to go to Australia to train because their BMX scene is much better than us. Instead, the powers that be at SSC and MCYS chose to ignore us and now? They are rushing like MAD to get things up and running for the Youth Olympics in 2010! We could have been prepared close to 8 years ago!

The Argentina BMX Team leaves Tuesday at 1850 hrs. bound for Australia on first step of it`s trip to the 2008 Olympic Games. In Australia, they will be able to train in a similar manner to Beijing and the team will be able to adjust to the hourly time change.

Team members travelling from Argentina include riders Gabriela Diaz, Maria Dutto and Ramiro Marino. Accompanying them will be National Coach, Flavio Vacarezza. Coming from the United States will be Men's racer, Cristian Becerine who will meet the rest of the team in Australia. Men's Alternate, Javier Colombo (2006 UCI World Champion) will remain and train at his home in California. - www.bmxargentina.com

BMX apparel

I had an email today from this young lady from Temasek Polytechnic, asking what apparel BMX riders wore. I am always happy to receive questions like this as it gives me the chance to educate people who do not know anything about BMX. She asked me what kind of "uniform" BMX riders wore. I just told her via email that all a BMX rider needs is a pair of long pants and a long-sleeved T-shirt. The reason for wearing it is because it helps to cushion your arms and legs from bails. Of course if you can get a specially-made BMX jersey, it would be a lot better as these jerseys are vented and are a lot cooler than a cotton long-sleeved T-shirt. So to all out there. If you need BMX questions that need to be answered, especially about BMX in Singapore, send me an email to admin@osbmx.com

I will be happy to provide you the answers to your questions the best I possibly can.

BMX site in Austria

Came across this Austrian BMX site. Looks pretty cool. I cannot understand what they wrote in German but it looks like they have a thriving BMX community down there. Looks like they were drawn to this site because they were looking for BMX monkeys. Well my friends, the monkeys are still around...

BMX makes one reminisce

Got this in an email today. Pretty good feeling I got I admit. Thanks Zul!

Hello there..

Zul here... I came across ur webbie on bmx... Cool website... I'm 24 years old now and after browsing at the pictures from your webbie, it reminds me of those time when I used to ride a bmx bike and my 1st bmx bike was Kuwahara, a birthday gift from my late grandfather in 1994. In 1999 when I was in Sec 3, I then save up my money and got myself a Specialized Fatboy and used to riding with my friends. My Fatboy was my trusty mode of transport since my sec school days till my poly days. I'm now working and my Fatboy has been collecting dust in my store room for almost 5 years and I last rode it in 2004. But after looking at ur pics, I miss riding my Fatboy and yesterday I just sent it for servicing after years. Keep up with the BMX revival... Cheers

SE Racing's Big Ripper

Someone posted this picture of SE Racing's 29'er BMX called the Big Ripper on VintageBMX. That is what it basically what it is, an oversized PK Ripper. I wonder what these things will go for? I must say they look really cool!

Some good BMX resources on the web

Most of the folks in Singapore do not know what BMX racing is about. I know, I know. I have been through this before. Just the other day, I received an email from a school teacher asking us if we can give some BMX lessons to their schoolkids. John and myself thought that it was a great idea to introduce it. A little late perhaps but better late than never. So I asked the teacher to check out some BMX resources on the net to get a better understanding what BMX was all about and I asked him to go to some of the links on this website. While checking through the links, I came upon this website that I stumbled upon in 2000 when I first set up the website. It was the website of New Jersey BMX and it was the very first BMX website set up, in 1995 no less! That website and BMX Mania are examples of some of the great BMX website available for people to know about our beloved sport. You can check the links on the right --> for more links to other great BMX websites.

Diamondback Turbo cranks

These puppies used the same bottom bracket spindle as the RedLine 400s, i.e. a slightly larger tapered-spindle than could be found on conventional bikes. Harry Leary used to run these on his bike and these are pretty hard to come by. I would love to have a pair of these but as they say, c'est la vie!

New Profile Rasta hubs

Profile, I must admit, are taking the whole design thing very seriously. These are their hubs called the Rasta hub because of the paint scheme. Still the same old dependable mechanism you can expect from Profile. Thanks to DigBMX for the heads up.

The alternative to Shimano DXRs

Some people swear by the Shimano DXR cranks for racing, despite cheaper offerings by other crank makers. I do not know about the rest of you but these Shimano DXR cranks are way over-priced. For those of you who insist on using aluminium cranks, use these. They are Primo Powerbite cranks. They are cheaper than the DXRs and I dare say stronger. Plus you can have the flexibility of using chainwheels, unlike the Shimano DXR

Sports certificate? Big deal!

That is what some people with sports diplomas here seem to think about themselves. Look guys. You may have the best sports certificates, sports diplomas or even degrees but if you know jackshit about BMX, sorry. All those certs and degrees will get you nowhere. You need the basics first. Telling everyone that you have all those degrees, and that you can make BMX happen in Singapore, you are in fact making people in the know laugh about you. Get real already!

Where is Steve Veltman?

I have a picture of him here when he used to ride for Magna. What very few know is that the bike he was riding was in fact a custom-made Kastan. In this picture, it looks like he is preparing for a race. Those look like TNT cranks that he is using on his bike, along with 48-spoked wheels. Steve Veltman always chose durability over lightness, something that I do as well. Looks like he retired. It is shame really. He was one of the most consistent riders around.

The old-school gathering was a blast!

As usual, the gathering was lots of fun. We managed to get a new member there and his name is Kenneth. There were some new bikes to be seen. First of all, Selvan showed up with a beautiful Redline PL-24 with 401-series Flight Cranks and Sonlite hubs. Then came Rick with a beautifully restored Kuwahara Nova which he powder-coated orange. It was personal preference I am sure. I do not think he was rooting for the Dutch who were playing against Russia for Euro 2008 that very same evening. In any case, you can find out more pictures here as I posted them up this morning. Hope to see more old-schoolers at this gathering. Keep Singapore old-school BMX alive folks!

Leafcycles new cranks

I love reading DigBMX because they have all the latest news on what is coming out and I saw this featured there by this company out of Germany called LeafCycles. They have a very innovative two-piece crank design called The Motosticks. , very similar to the Odyssey Wombolt. Other companies have also come up with innovative two-piece crank designs but as far as two-piece crank designs go, I like the Felt Splineloc the best. But I must say...the stuff coming out of Europe is truly amazing.

GT Introduces New BMX Team, Frame

LAKE FOREST, CA (BRAIN)—GT Bicycles is launching a new BMX team program dubbed the Project, made up of 10 riders from around the world who were selected through an online contest held on the Vital BMX Web site.

Members of the Vital BMX Web site community were invited to upload a video featuring their riding and a short interview as their contest entry. GT received more than 200 entries and selected the top 10 riders to be part of the new team.

The riders span the planet from the UK, Australia and all over the United States. GT has developed a new dirt/street frame also called the Project, which is available exclusively to Project riders.

“This is a great opportunity for talented riders who haven’t been discovered yet to ride a great bike, and to be part of our family,” said Chuck Fallon, GT BMX team manager. “This is how BMX got started back in the day, and this is what BMX is really all about.”

The Project provided GT with an opportunity to build the new Project frame, which was designed by GT's BMX senior product manager, Robert Kahler, GT pro rider Dave
Dillewaard and Fallon.

“The Project frame is designed for street and dirt riding, because kids ride everything — not just dirt and not just street,” Kahler said. “It comes with removable Oryg tabs, a 2-inch top tube, and weighs in at 5 pounds.”

For now, these frames are available exclusively to Project riders. GT Project riders also receive T-shirts, hats, and decals. Riders are expected to provide content to GT Bicycles for the Web site including photos, videos and blogs.

The GT Bicycles website will launch the pages dedicated to the GT Project on Sunday.

World Record Attempt in Central Park, New York City

NEW YORK, NY--(MARKET WIRE)--Jun 9, 2008 -- On Thursday, June 12th 2008 in the heart of New York City, BMX legend Kevin Robinson will attempt to soar into the world record books by clearing the height of a six story building on a BMX bike, in the next Red Bull Experiment.

Kevin is the winner of seven X Games medals, including three gold. He will make his attempt on a never before built Super Quarter Pipe.

This feat is experimental in many ways -- from the construction of the ramp, to the speed it will take to break the record, the g-forces on his body and ultimately what will happen when Kevin leaves the top of the ramp for the first time. Will he come back to earth safe? Will he own the world record?

High oil prices? Cycle to work!

The picture above may seem funny. I got it off one of the joke websites. But teh sad thing is, the reality is not. High oil prices have directly or indirectly led to food prices being raised, transport costs being raised as well and gradually making everyone hot and bothered about the economy and its rumoured inflation. So I say again, like I have been saying before. Cycle to work. You get healthy in the process by the exercise too! I do it once or twice a week and I feel that it has made a difference in my life. So break out that bike and make a difference today. Do not let high oil prices drag you down

New Fly stem

Flybikes has released a new stem according to DigBMX. I checked it out on the Flybikes website and it looks pretty good. Looks like everyone is lightening up their parts. This thing has been hollowed out pretty much. Check it out here

A washout but not the end of the world

There was supposed to be a dirtjump competition today at the Tampines BMX Track but the wet weather kind of put a damper on the situation. It was a shame too because some riders came all the way from Indonesia and Malaysia. I knew something was amiss when I woke up this morning to rain pelting down like crazy. When I finally made it over to Tampines, I heard that the competition was cancelled. So Freddy aka Kruger went cycling and visiting bikeshops in the Tampines region and we bought some stuff. We visited the track twice and saw that it was really waterlogged and flooded. It was a fruitful day after all, in spite of the rain

SE Bikes Bringing BMX Retro Back

PHILADELPHIA, PA (BRAIN)—For at least one BMX company retro is in.

A large part of SE Bikes’ resurgence can be attributed to the PK Ripper (pictured) and another 1980s legend—OM Flyer.

Sales for the 2008 model year are up 100 percent in dollars with a 60 percent increase in unit sales for the 2007 model year. Hence the need to order 75 percent more 2009 bikes.

Simple Bike Company

Simple Bike Company is a bike company that hails from Europe, Denmark in fact. From what I can see at their site, the bikes are exactly what they are, simple and pleasing to look at. You can judge from the two Simple BMX frames in the picture above. Check them out at SimpleBMX.com

S and M re-release the Dirt Bike

According to what they said on their website:

We've been getting requests for basically the same frame for awhile now and this is it. The Dirt Bike has a 74.5 head tube, taller stand over and a 14" rear end. Built with SuperTherm tubing, this frame is light and strong. It's not available brakeless, it uses a regular seat-clamp, there aren't any holes drilled in it for lightness. This thing looks like a regular BMX frame that wasn't designed specifically for tail-whips, nose wheelies and hang fives! In other words it's a fucking Dirt Bike. Get off the World Wide Interweb and go haul ass on a Dirt Bike.

Available in classic powder-coated S and M colors Black, Yellow and Red with retro Dirt bike graphics.

Looks like S and M are getting back on the gas.

Willers and Walker at BMX world champs

News from NZ City

Top New Zealand BMX rider Marc Willers is enjoying his time under new Canadian coach Ken Cools.

Cools replaced Grant White in March after the Australian unexpectedly stepped down.

Willers says Cools' approach has been refreshing. The world number four says he has spent the last few weeks in Phoenix training with Cools and he gets on well with him.

Willers and women's world number one Sarah Walker will compete in the BMX world championships in Taiyuan, China this weekend.

Willers says he is looking forward to the event, but the venue is vastly different to what they will race on in August in Beijing. He says it is a smaller scale track while the Olympic track is "BMX on steroids" and something a lot of the riders are not used to.

Willers and Walker will practice on the circuit over the next couple of days before the event on Saturday.

As a possible precursor to Beijing, Willers says the pollution in the city of Taiyuan has taken him aback. He describes the smog as "gnarly" and he is trying to avoid going outside.

Beckham calls injured North Shields BMX rider

My respect for David Beckham just went up another notch.

By Sonia Sharma, Evening Chronicle

SUPERSTAR David Beckham is more used to people waiting for him than the other way round.

But the footballer was kept on hold for 40 minutes as he waited to wish a speedy recovery to a paralysed BMX dirt rider.

Beckham was at the extreme action sports event the X Games in Los Angeles when a short documentary was shown on the big screen about Stephen Murray’s accident.

Stephen, who grew up in North Shields, suffered serious spinal injuries while attempting a double back flip on his bike during a competition in America last year.

He was left paralysed from the neck down but has vowed to walk again.

His plight touched Beckham so much, he got Stephen’s contact details and rang him up in a hospital in Baltimore to wish him well. But the star had to wait 40 minutes to pass on his best wishes.

Olympic Games revive biker Kintner's fire for BMX

News from the Seattle Times by Meri-Jo Borzilleri

When BMX was added to the Olympic calendar for the Beijing Olympics, some riders felt like they won the lottery. For new sports, the Olympics generally mean more attention, more money for training, more prestige.

For Jill Kintner, the news got little more than a shrug. She had raced on the bicycle-motocross pro circuit since she was a teenager at Kirkland's Juanita High; she won a world title in 2002. But now she gets her adrenaline charge, and a top world ranking, from mountaincross, racing mountain bikes downhill on an obstacle-strewn course.

Razak's son in training

This is Razak's son. Looks like he has the gate balancing act all dialled-up. This the way it should be folks...start them when they are young and they will grow up to be pretty good BMX racers. I only started when I was 15 years old but this kid has an advantage. He is ring an old Kuwahara too! Perfect bike for the perfect kid!

BMX: Biking more than a hobby

News from RapidCityJournal.com by Jake Nordbye

RAPID CITY — When 10-year-old Rachael Hopperdietzel and 14-year-old Victoria Hopperdietzel started BMX biking, kids at school would ask them why they didn’t play “normal” sports. The answer is more complex than one might think.

For these two nationally-ranked sisters, BMX biking is more than just a hobby. Beyond competing all over the United States and Canada and racing against athletes from all over the world, the Hopperdietzel’s both qualified to compete in Beijing, China in the World Championships.

BMX shop in Singapore?

I just got asked via a post in the blog about the No. 1 BMX shop in Singapore. I really had to pause and think about this one. As it is, there is no number one BMX shop in Singapore because as a whole, bike shops in Singapore are generally devoid of any thing BMX-wise. they do not understand BMX and they do not know BMX. Those that claim to know BMX (like some of these monkeys claiming to be BMX consultants) are normally people who get all their knowledge from watching freestyle videos and MTV. Imagine that, if these so-called consultants do not know about BMX, how do you expect those bike-shops to know?

We are still waiting for the SACA AGM. We want to have BMX represented properly. In short, we do not want monkeys spoiling the scene. BMX should be represented by real BMXers, BMXers who raced or who have raced. We intend to do that. This website intends to do that.

GT Bicycles - a flashback

Taken from their website, this video is kind of interesting. Who woulda thought that Gary Turner, in making bikes for his kids, would have inadvertently created this company. Amazing. Well, I can safely say that GT Bicycles has its roots in BMX

Coyote Acid Skull BMX

I have been asked about this BMX and there even seems to be on on sale in the local Yahoo auction site. Some person asked me if this bike can be used for racing. Well, technically, it can but the geometry will not give you much of an advantage. Another thing is the material is is made out of. The frame and fork are made out of hi-tensile steel. While that may seem good for most beginners, hi-tensile steel may not be up to the shredding of street riding or dirt-jumping. I had a hi-tensile steel bike before. It did not last very long either. It is a good and inexpensive bike to learn the basics of BMX on but there a lots of shops in Singapore selling bikes. Maybe you guys are better off getting one there.

London businesses urged to get staff cycling

Saw this article at BikeRadar.com and I wonder if it will happen here in Singapore. Wishful thinking I guess. An excerpt of the article is here:

Increasing numbers of Londoners have taken to two wheels and are cycling to work, including the Capital's new Mayor, Boris Johnson. Now Transport for London is asking cyclists to register for the Workplace Cycle Challenge to encourage even more Londoners to cycle to work.

The old-school BMX gathering at Bukit Batok Skatepark

As usual, it was a great gathering of all the old-schoolers and I must say that I really look forward to such gatherings. Present last night were Salleh, Eddy Chan, Freddy aka Kruger, Ismail, Hassan, Frederick, Selvan and his lady, Eddy Meng and Rick. The highlight of the day had to be the old "black horse" bike that Eddy Chan restored. Truly a work of art but my gosh, the laid back head angle made it exceedingly difficult for me to pedal, given my long legs and all. I had to sit way back at the end of the bike in order to ride this bike effectively.

New BMX shop in Tampines?

well, I have heard rumours but that is all they are at the present...rumours. Seems that they are going to bring in lots of BMX racing-specific stuff. That looks pretty promising. More details when I get more details :-)

Singer oil to the rescue!

There are times when your bike may need some lubrication, especially the chain. BMXers who ride and race often need to check their chains for obvious signs of wear and tear and change it when necessary. I make the habit of changing mine every 6 months if I ride often. To maintain it, I de-grease it and apply a thin layer of Singer oil on it. Singer oil is relatively inexpensive (about $1 a bottle) and is good. I have been using it for years and I have yet to find a good substitute for it, bang-for-buck wise. Get a bottle today. It can be found in most hardware shops and some provision shops.

SACA AGM soon

The Singapore Amateur Cycling Association, also known as SACA, will be holding its AGM pretty soon. A vote will be called for a new VP of BMX. There are lots of people out there who call themselves BMX consultants and BMX guys but sad to say, many of them do not even know the bare basics about BMX. So when you choose a new VP of BMX, please choose wisely. The YOG is coming up in two years time. The last thing we need are monkeys who know nothing about BMX spearheading the cause.

Mike Moeller on Supercross?

According to BMX News, that is exactly what happened. This is not new news but it is pretty interesting. Looks like Supercross have some new blood! According to the article:

Not wanting to fill the vacancy with just any AA Pro as we want a rider that has loyalty to the program and is as nice to the kids and fans as the rest of the Supercross Pro's are we decided to leave the spot open for a bit. That was until we received a call from one of the nicest and most loyal AA Pro's on the circuit. Mikey Moeller. Seems that he had decided to leave Crupi after being with them for 9 of his last 11 years and was looking for a new home.

There you have it. The newest Supercross Factory Flyer!
