Rising Oil Prices Trigger Costlier Tires

Way back in the day, if we ever took any of our friends' bikes for a spin, we always got a little enthusiastic. More often than not, it would end with a dramatic sweeping, skidding stop. Our gentle rebuke to our friend would be, "Hey, my dad does not own a tire company ok?" Well, it looks like we had all start changing our tires a little less frequency these days. There was an article at Bike Retailer and Industry News that links the rise in oil to the rise in tire prices. Don't believe me? Read on. The article is right here

MILL VALLEY, CA (BRAIN)—It’s not only a recent jump in taxes that are increasing tire prices.

Because of rising oil prices, consumers should expect tire prices to increase upwards of 18 percent in the following year.

“We increased the price of our high end folding bead tires by 10 percent for 2008,” said WTB marketing coordinator Dain Zaffke, a result of rising oil costs. “It's an unfortunate reality for manufacturers, retailers and consumers.”

“But spending an additional $5 on your favorite tire a couple times a season pales in comparison to the poor SUV drivers throwing an extra $20 into the tank with every fill up,” he added.

Kenda marketing director Jim Wannamaker said that prices will “spike” upward soon. As China continues to grow and other countries demand all the cars and consumer products that Americans have, rising prices are a fact of life—and it’s not just tires.

“Every VCR, DVD player, every car or truck, every airplane produced, all the plastic shopping bags, all the items using plastic, or running on diesel or gasoline need oil as a core ingredient,” Wannamaker said. “We are consumers and as such there is a price to pay for everything. Those prices will rise and continue to rise until we exhaust the supply.”

So there you have it. Take it easy on those tires!

Anne-Caroline Chausson returns to BMX

Got this news from Cyclingnews. It is good news for sure! It would be great to see more of the top riders returning to their roots

She may be one of the world's most successful female cyclists, but France's Anne-Caroline Chausson is missing one thing from her palmares: a gold medal. Now, 13 years after her last BMX race, the two time BMX Elite World Champion is back and she's aiming for gold in Beijing.

"I had been approached for a come back, three years ago, but I still had a lot of projects in MTB and a goal five years down the road was a little too long," the 29 year-old told bmxmania.com. "I never thought too much about it after that (…) but at the Roc d'Azur, a lot of people started to ask me the question again.

"A week later, I had the chance to share some thoughts with Judo Olympic Gold medallist David Douillet, about the Olympic Games," explained Chausson. "A little bit of pressure from my boyfriend and that was it, the decision was made."

Chausson, who finished second in last weekend's third French Cup round, has an impressive track record in both BMX and mountain biking. In addition to her two BMX world titles, Chausson has taken victory in over 15 mountain bike world titles split across the downhill and four-cross disciplines.

"I feel good on the bike, but there's still a lot of work on the technical and physical sides to be competitive," reported Chausson last weekend, her first BMX race since the 1993 ABA Grand Nationals in the United States. "We can say that I have some good foundations."

Airborne Titanium BMX

It has been quite some time since Airborne released this frame. It made quite a stir in the BMX community because they may have been the first to release a titanium BMX frame in the market. It was called the Airborne Misbehavin. Made up with some choice parts from DK and Cane Creek, this bike wowed the audiences. RedLine had come up with a titanium frame but it was only a prototype. Taj Mihelich and Joe Rich of TerribleOne fame even created a titanium Barcode frame once and it was displayed at Interbike. I wonder...will titanium be the frame of choice for the racers in the Olympics? Sad to say, Airborne is no more but has renamed itself as Van Nicholas. I do not think that they are interested in remaking this frame. I would snap it up if I came across it though.

Bike-friendly cities

A friend of mine sent me this. I do not think Singapore falls in this category. Nuff said

What kind of gear do BMX riders use?

Honest. That is the question I got from a creatives firm today. Apparently they are creating some publicity for the 2008 Olympics and they needed to know about what kind of gear BMXers wear when they race. I asked the person who called me if she knew what BMX was. Not surprisingly, her answer was no. Strange is it not? First of all, research can be done on the web. Secondly, if you do not know what BMX stands for and yet you are creating something for the Olympics on BMX, that speaks volumes about ignorance. Oh well. I kind of expected it. And for the uninformed, BMX stands either for Bears Make Xylophones or Bicycle Motocross. I think it is the latter.

And in this corner...

Well, it looks like people are knocking on our little BMX door. Just today I get an aemail from a creatives company, asking me some advice about BMX. Basically, these guys have no clue about BMX and they want some schoolin' as a friend of mine used to say. This is funny. last time, when you mentioned BMX to others, they label it as a kids sport, feigning interest and giving us that "don't call us, we'll call you" Funny how things have changed huh?

Singapore ready to host the Youth Olympics?

Somehow, I feel that there still are some things that need to be sorted out. For starters, BMX is now an Olympic sport and we do not even have a proper BMX track. For years we have been asking for help and support from the powers that be but the help has been little. I got pointed to a website at http://www.singapore2010.sg today and on the website it says:

With some of the best sporting facilities in the world and supported by excellent organisation, both participants and spectators are guaranteed an exciting and hassle-free Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. Our facilities include state-of-the-art swimming complexes, track and field complexe to tennis centres, basketball and netball courts, squash centres, gymnasiums, riding centres and rowing venues.

Hold on a minute guys...how about the BMX track? Don't tell me you guys do not know we need a BMX track? Sorry guys...we are not completely ready to host the Youth Olympics, sad to say. You guys are losing time. We have been asking for funds, materials and help for almost ten years and very little has come our way. You guys are gonna need a miracle.

The shape of things to come, a carbon-fibre BMX bike?

Take a very good look at this bike. Sad to say, this will be the shape of things to come in BMX as the stakes get higher and people are choosing whatever necessary to win in BMX. All of a sudden, BMX has lost its fun way of life. It is now competition, money and recognition. We have come a long way from the Schwinn Stingray days and we have now embraced carbon fibre, clipless pedals and even *shudder* aluminium cranks. Do not get me wrong. I am all for advancement but paying more for parts that will not last? Something went wrong somewhere. This pic is a picture I got of the Internet. It says Prototype. I hope that it remains a prototype and not go into mass production but I must say that the chances are pretty slim. It is sad indeed.

Cycling a speedy way to burn fat

By JOSETTE DEBROUWER

It all comes down to that issue of lifestyle change.

You need to get to the post office. You don't have enough time to walk there and back, but it's a beautiful day. You reach for your car keys, promising yourself you'll go for a walk later.

What about your bike?

"If I have a choice of driving a car or taking a bike, I go for the bike," says cycling enthusiast John Sigurjonsson.

"When you're riding a bike, you're right in the world around you. You hear, smell and see everything that's going on around you."

Sigurjonsson said two generations ago, people of all ages used bikes as a viable mode of transportation. The added bonus was that they were getting in some exercise while getting to work or school.

"That has changed completely, very drastically, over the past generation.

"We've become conditioned to not wanting to feel the environment directly. In a car, we don't have to contend with the sun and wind and insects."

The result, though, is a generation that is considerably less healthy, and noticeably less active.

Sigurjonsson said opting for your bike can change that.

"The easiest way to incorporate physical activity into your day is to walk or ride instead of getting into the car."

From Chatham Daily News

Came across this 26" BMX from Sycip and i must say that it is one nice looking bike. Maybe I shall get this when the time comes for me to replace my OM Flyer. Very unique name for it. It is called the Super Boy. there are more pics of it here

See you guys there! Bring your old BMXes down and relive the glory days!

Suntour Superbe hubs

For a time, these were one of the best hubs to have on your bike when racing. Mighty Stu Thomsen used to have them on his PL-20 back in the day and I can safely say that many a professional BMX rider used them back in the day. I am talking about the Suntour Superbe Pro hubs and as you can see in the picture above, they looked good and were tough! I used to drool over these hubs while as a kid but on a limited budget, I could not really afford them. I did however have a pair of Suntour sealed bearing hubs so that was as close as I got!

Another letter in the Straits Times regarding bringing bicycles on MRT trains

Checked out the forum and there is yet another letter. Way to go guys! Remember, buy a bike bag and keep your dismantled bike in one. Try not to make it an inconvenience to their passengers. Be polite to the MRT staff at all times. As for the rude MRT staff mentioned in the article, do not stoop to their level. The story is here, courtesy of the Straits Times

I WRITE in response to the article, 'Allow folded bikes on buses and trains' by Ms Ng Lai Yien (ST, Dec 17).

Let me be a bit more objective than the few other concerns raised.

I am a BMX rider myself. And I have faced this problem a lot of times.

I can get to Somerset because I personally know the station security officer and a few of the male station masters at Yishun.

But when I get to Somerset, I am warned by the station masters even before I exit the station. This has happened a lot of times.

On my way back once, there were two male station masters on the prowl outside the gantry gates and, when they saw me, they approached me and rudely asked me to leave. They also threatened to report me to the police.

The bike bag is used by riders so that it would not inconvenience other train riders. The bag is rectangular and lighter than an average wheelchair. If we hold it upright, it stands at about 1.2 metres and is less than half a metre wide. How much space can we take?

SMRT has lifts and bigger gates installed for people in wheelchairs and/or those carrying bulky items. And bikes are banned?

Extreme sports culture is growing in Singapore and the Republic should be supportive of this.

Let's talk about how other countries promote these kind of sports. In Canada and some parts of Australia, Europe and the US, trains have racks for bikes and boards. They have doors on their buses that do not have a handrail in the middle of it. They have skate parks in every town to cut down the number of people gathering at the same park.

I think the solutions are:

1. Build more skate parks in the different districts.
2. Allow bikes in public transport, and maybe change the inside of our trains.

Allow folded bikes on buses and trains

I saw this in today's Straits Times online. I have written to the powers that be at Singapore MRT but to no avail. Maybe this will stir up some of these SMRT people there and allow folded bikes on trains. The article is located here: http://www.straitstimes.com/ST%2BForum/Story/STIStory_187488.html

MY 15-YEAR-OLD nephew has been an avid BMX stunt cyclist for more than a year.

He meets his friends about three times a week at the Youth Park in Somerset Road.

This is a healthy and exciting sport for youngsters like him and we applaud the efforts by the Ministry of Community Development, Youth & Sports and the National Youth Council to provide a place for extreme sports for bikers and skaters since 2004.

However, there is an important issue regarding transport for these cyclists which I would like the authorities to address.

My nephew has told me that in the past few months, he and his friends have been stopped many times by officers at MRT stations and told not to take their bicycles onto the train.

Please note that these bikes have been dismantled and folded neatly into special BMX bags which the bikers carry on their shoulders. The bags have clear BMX logos to indicate a bicycle inside.

When they explained they were only carrying bicycles to the Youth Park at Somerset, they were asked to leave the MRT station and find another means of transport. They were even threatened with a fine if they continued to take their bikes on the train.

Getting on the bus has also been a problem for these youngsters. Bus drivers have asked them rudely what they were carrying in their big black bags. Some have asked them to leave the bus.

So it seems the only means of public transport for this group of bikers is by taxi.

This does not make sense, as the Youth Park is located in the heart of town in Orchard Road next to Somerset MRT station. In fact, this is what my nephew has done for the past few months, spending a lot of money simply to pursue the sport he loves.

Ng Lai Yien (Ms)

All I can say is, I am VERY disaapointed with some of our local authorities. Ms Ng is telling it like it is. Good on you Ms Ng and thanks for the support!

SE racing T-shirts

Check this out. SE Racing is making T-shirts! If you guys are wondering what I want for Christmas, wonder no more!

Sunset Trails or Tampines BMX Track

That is the question I get asked time and time again. Here is the explanation. Since 1998, when John Tan got the land to build a BMX track, it has always been known as the Tampines BMX track. When the dirt jumps were built there, the dirtjump trails were called Sunset Trails. To recap it once again, the whole BMX track is called the Tampines BMX Track and the dirtjump trails within them are called Sunset Trails. Hope that this explanation makes it clearer

My DK Legend

Somewhere in the year 2000 when I got back into BMX after a 15-year hiatus, I bought the best bike that money could buy and it was the DK Legend. Robbie Miranda had jumped over 10 cars with it and it was pretty much OK even after a bad fall. So I thought to myself, why not? If that bike could take a bail like that, it should be no problem carrying an overweight guy like me. Over the years, it has served as a wonderful companion till I sold off the frame and fork last year. It was indeed sad to lose it as we had gone through a lot together but it went to a person who would make better use of it than I would. This bike won the Vans Triple Crown in 2000. It is truly a Legend.

Drivetrain maintenance tips

I would be rich if I had a dollar for every person that had a failed drivetrain. That has got to be one of the more important parts of your bike. You have to make sure that the parts used in the drivetrain are not worn out. Get a good freewheel for starters. A brand like the one pictured above will last some time but may be a bit hard to get. But get a new one preferably.

Another thing you should check is your chain. The chain can stretch and can break if not checked for periodic wear and tear. Always degrease your chain every 6 months. Degrease it in diesel and after that, lubricate it well with an oil like Singer which is relatively easy to get and rather cheap at a dollar a bottle.

Don't forget to check your chainrings too, or sprockets if you would like to call them that. And also make sure that the chain alignment is spot on. I will say it again...your drivetrain is very important. Constant checks will lead to many hours of enjoyment instead of hours walking home if the drivetrain fails.

BMX in a reality show?

Seems that it is. According to BMXMania, it has been reported that Jason Bennett is a participant in the show and BMX is featured in it. The name of the show is Last Man Standing and is on the Discovery Channel.

BMX till I die

That is the question everyone asks me everytime they see me riding my bike. Sometimes I ask myself that question too. Why BMX? I wish there could be an easy answer to that question but unfortunately there is not. How can I explain my love for this 20-inch bike when that is the only bike that I have been comfortable on all these years? How can I explain that when the film E.T. came out, it totally changed my view of cycling? How can I possibly explain how the BMX bug has still been with me since 1982? I can't find an easy answer to it. It is a passion I suppose, a passion that brings all the BMxers together. We live our biking lives our way. BMX is the root of extreme cycling. Oh sure, there may be the pundits who may not agree with me but seriously, how many of you readers really know your roots? I do not know about mountainbikes. I have ridden them and I used to own one till I gave it away. I do have an On-One 29-incher though but it is set up like a BMX with Profile cranks and a rigid fork. Some things cannot change and maybe that is why I am still rooted to the old-school of BMX. Others may say what they like but I will continue to be a BMXer till the day I die

Aftermath of the night crusing session

One thing I love about these night cruising sessions is that we get to meet up, exchange information and parts, swap stories and in overall, have fun with each other. The topics most of the time are BMX bikes, what we can get and where and general small talk. Picked up a good tip from Selvan today about where to get a cruiser handlebar. Got to get one for my SE Racing OM-Flyer. Freddy aka Kruger was not around to take some shots but he was there in spirit. We sympathised with Eddy Meng over some unscrupulous bugger who cheated him out of his money when he bid on a Hutch Trickstar on Ebay. But Eddy was in a much brighter mood when he started talking about his other purchase that he would get pretty soon. Selvan showed up on a tricked-out SE Racing Floval Flyer. I must say that it was set up pretty nice! Our next meeting will be next year. All of us are looking forward to it!

Old-school BMX Singapore at East Coast McDonalds

This pic is Ricks Diamond Back after a respray and touch up. He made it all white. We are going to do the same thing tonight at East Coast McDonalds, chatting about old times and then going for some night-cruising. Quite a few are going down and I dare say that it will be a very interesting evening.

TJ Lavin breaks his leg

According to the Schwinn website:
" Las Vegas, NV, November 21, 2007 -- TJ Lavin broke his leg at the final stop of the Dew Action Sports Tour in Orlando, Florida about 8 weeks ago. The break was pretty serious, and with 2 of the breaks being compound fractures, it has left him with no feeling or movement in his large toe. He is working with the best people available to get him back on the bike, and the good news is he will start walking next week, but very carefully. This time off the bike has given him a lot of time to work on his music and shoot photos of his friends. As always TJ has a great attitude, and he is up for the challenge of getting back on the bike as soon as possible!"

Shimano recalls potentially poisonous gloves

According to Bicycle Business in an article here, Shimano did a recall of these gloves below. According to the article below, it says:
"It has recently come to Shimano's attention that, contrary to its strict contractual specifications, certain PRO, SHIMANO and SAINT cycling gloves manufactured by Shimano's supplier in Pakistan contain traces of Benzidine in excess of the levels specified by EU regulations. As a precaution, Shimano has voluntarily decided to recall all PRO, SHIMANO and SAINT cycling gloves which carry a label indicating that they were made in Pakistan, or which carry no label at all. Cycling gloves that carry a label indicating they were manufactured elsewhere are not affected by this recall. The label is located on the inside of the gloves."

Shimano DX cranks

These babies were adjustable from 175mm to 180mm. These DX cranks also came with a splined spindle and were tough. I would take these over the new DXRs anyday

RIP Evel Knievel

I had a shock when I received a call from one of my friends. Legendary stuntman Robert "Evel" Knievel passed away. He was 69 years old. This man is an inspiration to many a BMXer out there who tried to emulate him in the tricks they did. Hoffman Bikes even had a signature bike dedicated to him. He is in heaven now, with no more suffering. RIP Evel. You will be sorely missed by all the BMXers.

Jim Rienstra's Aspire

One of the reasons why I like BMX so much is that we were one of the first extreme sports on two wheels, way before any mountainbikers started getting serious with their bikes. Check out what some of these guys can do, on bikes with no suspension. Respect.

The Youth Olympics and Singapore

BMX-wise, do you think we can host it? According to a news report, it is said that "Singapore said it has the right software and enough facilities to put up a good show"

That being said, bicycle motocross or BMX for short. We have been lobbying with the powers that be for almost ten years to bring up BMX in Singapore and we have received little or no help. Only recently, some little trickles have been flowing in. Why? Because BMX is now an Olympic sport.

Back to the question. can we host it? Maybe for other sports but for BMX? What has the SSC done to help us BMX-wise? Have they seen our track? And they want to hold the Youth Olympics here? That is pretty much a rhetorical question.

Shimano DXR cranks

After running chromoly cranks for years, I will shudder if i ever have to put these on my bike. I am thankful though that Shimano has BMXers in mind when they made this DXR crankset and DXR gruppo. They are pretty pricey though but to the weight-weenie BMXer today, they will will suffice. Not me though. After having broken a pair of aluminium cranks in the past, chromoly is all I trust

An old pic

I was at this downhill race in January 2003. Raining cats and dogs it was. Was just there to literally "chill" with some friends and was asked to do announcements. Bloody hell. cannot escape my MC past...

The Kuwahara site

Some time ago, a pal of mine back in the US named Michael Ringseis decided to make a site honouring the Kuwahara bikes of the past. We called the site simply The Kuwahara Site. With the help of some old-schoolers here in Singapore like Jerry Yeow and some others, the site was created and we put lots of information on the site. Check it out and see what you think!

A 26" looptail Quadangle?

Saw this on VintageBMX. Ain't it a beauty? I have seen a 20", a 24" and now there is a 26" Quadangle. The miracles never stop happening. Complete with Landing Gear forks too!

S&M Pitchfork

I had these on my bike. The word here is had. I had to take them out because they were rusting. They were chrome-plated and the rust was starting to form. Had to send them for powder-coating. These are the best BMX forks that money can buy, and also one of the toughest. Sure, they are a little heavy but the peace of mind you will ave when you have one of these on your bike, knowing that they will take anything you give them, sort of puts your mind at ease. The legendary RedLine Flight crank...in red!

Red Flight cranks anybody? I did not know RedLine were still making these but it looks like they are. Cool eh? They have been making these for quite a few years now. Dual-pinchbolts and sealed bearings.

RedLine and its colourful history

RedLine has a rather colourful history. It seems that in the ABA Hall OF Fame, there are more RedLine riders than anyone else. Check out the history of RedLine and the bikes they made and read how RedLine came from a manufacturer of motorcycle chassis to BMX.

Eddy Meng's new Ripper

Check out the bike that Eddy Meng is getting now. It is the, I think, expert-sized PK Ripper with a 20" top tube. Why they dropped the Perry Kramer PK is way beyond me. You can check out his postings on the Singapore BMX Forums. SE Bikes is coming out with some cool stuff and while I am sad to see that they are nowhere like the SE Racing of old, I am at the same time glad to see that the legendary brand is still alive and well. Check out their site at http://www.sebikes.com and you will see lots of eye candy

the Intense Zebra?

Check this out people. Intense did a limited edition zebra-painted frame and I must say that it looks original. Who would have thought of such a scheme colour-wise? And check out the SINZ forks on this baby. Too cool!

Intense racing frames

Check out the frames from Intense. Very unique looking. This is the Podium Frame series for the little racers. Looks pretty slick but I will take the old traditional way of making BMX frames. Something to look forward too perhaps? Check out http://www.intensebmx.com

SINZ BMX forks

Bought these forks to put on the cruiser as the older S&M Pitchforks were kind of rusted. Gonna send them for powder-coating. In case any of you guys wanna check out what Sinz has to offer, you can check out their website at http://www.sinz-racing.com and you will see that they make all kinds of parts. Very satisfied with the purchase and these forks ARE stiff. If they can handle a buffalo like me, they can handle anything else, guaranteed!

Bandar Utama BMX track in Malaysia

My buddy Steven Leong built a track up there in Bandar Utama, Damansara. Wonderful concrete track it is and I must say that it is the best that I have seen, track-wise, in a very long time. Steven built it out of concrete because he did not want it to erode. There are pros and cons about making the track out of concrete but I must say that that the pros well outnumber the cons. I went up there in May and took a couple of videos. See for yourself!

Brand new Kuwahara ET

Well, not really but you get the drift. Rick came upon this in the Western part of Singapore. Now how can it get better than this? Really brings back memories

New look to the site

Hi all. Just trying to give a new look to the site. It has been vacant for too long with nary an update. This is a test so sometimes, you may see the text and layout change here and there but it is only because I have not had a set idea as to how to set up this page. Once I reach a decision, it will be final. Thanks and welcome to Singapore BMX part...well...whatever
